Use of the icepacks

Home / Practical / More info Operation / Use of the icepacks

This bag contains three icepacks, two Velcro strips and two small towels.

The icepacks are washed with alcohol and the Velcro strips and towels washed at 60° between every patient, so you can be sure they are clean.

Cooling is only useful the first three days after an operation. Please return the icepacks at your first control appointment at Coupure centre.

Use

  • Freezer—Put the icepacks in your freezer for several hours.
  • Towel and Velcro—Adjust to comport by placing a towel between icepack and skin if necessary. Fix the icepacks on your face by using the Velcro strips.
  • Application—It is recommended to apply the icepacks for 20 minutes, then leave the treated area uncovered for twenty minutes before reapplying the pack.
  • Freezer—Return your icepacks to the freezer after every use.

Purpose of cold therapy

  • Swelling—The immediate application of cold therapy is beneficial for reducing post-operative swelling by constricting the capillary vessels and slowing down the flow of blood and other fluids to the operated area.
  • Pain relief—Patients also benefit from cold therapy’s anesthetic effect on the nerves, which helps reduce the sensation of pain and provides a soothing, refreshing and relaxing feeling to the operated area.
  • Bleu stains—Cold therapy reduces the risk of hematoma formation.
