Organising your operation

Home / Practical / Organising your operation

Thanks for booking you operation with us. Planning your operation is very important, for you and for us. Please read with attention the following information.

Obligatory things to arrange

1Anesthesiology form (only for patients who have general anesthesia

You need to fill in a questionnaire on behalf of the anesthesiologist. You should Download the anesthesiology document here, print it , fill it in and bring it to the clinic the day of surgery.
If you are a healthy person you don’t have to be seen by the anesthesiologist before.

2Preoperative tests

These investigations are NOT included in the price, with exception of the CT-scan for an Adam’s apple reduction.

All these tests, except of the CT-scan of the trachea for a trachea shave, you should arrange in your home country. Your general practitioner in your home country could help you with this. One month before the operation you can mail us the results of these tests. Bloodtest and ECG can be no older then 3 months. They are very important as the anesthesiologist will not give general anesthesia without it.

  • Electrocardiogram—Only when your are older then 45 and have general anesthesia. Please e-mail us the report at least one month before the operation to be able to make the necessary judgements.
  • Blood test—For all ages when you have general anesthesia. Also please email the results latest 1 month before your surgery. We really need the results of these investigations as our anesthesiologists won’t give anesthesia without it. The tests we need are: Hb, hematocrit, APTT/PTT, platelets, fibrinogen, creatine, urea, electrolytes.
  • Orthopantomogram of the lower jaw—Only when you have a jaw or chin recontouring. You can bring this image with you or email it to us.
  • CT scan of the trachea—Only when you have a trachea shave. This investigation can not be performed in your home country. If you need a trachea shave<, we will arrange an appointment for you in Ghent on the same day as your preoperative consultation. The price of this scan is included. More information about the CT-scan for a trachea shave

Other things to arrange

1Duration of your stay

Standard a patient stays from 1 day before the surgery till 8 days after (so a total of 10 days). If you have sutures in the forehead they will be removed 8 days after your surgery in the morning after which you can return home. For a typical schedule of your operative stay in Ghent, click here

2Booking a flight

Ghent in Belgium is easy to reach from all countries. Best is to travel by airplane or the Eurostar to the capital of Belgium, Brussels, and from there you can take a train to Ghent station. From there you can take a taxi to your hotel. For more information we refer to our webpage on transport to Ghent.

3Booking a hotel

A hotel you should book yourself. For suggestions we refer you to our webpage on hotels.

4Some things to bring with you

Some things you might want to think about:

  • Blender—If you’re going to have a jaw- and or chinshave or a cheekbone augmentation you should bring a blender to blend your food! Check at your hotel facility if this machine is available.
  • Adaptor—If you want to use any electrical equipment you will need an appropriate adapter, if you come from the United Kingdom.
  • Food— If you come without a partner make sure you have (soft) food and drinks in your room for at least 4 days.
  • Entertainment—Bring personal entertainment items such as a laptop, music, books, journals, crosswords, etc.  The first few days after surgery you will probably spend most of the time resting in your room.
